WHY GREEN TEAM TWENTE?

Do you want to…

…contribute to the future of sustainable mobility by designing, building and racing the most hyper-efficient hydrogen urban concept car of the Netherlands?

Are you…

…extremely dedicated, passionate about the application of technology and willing to work in a high-performance team, but like to have fun and creative freedom as well?

BUILD THE MOST EFFICIENT HYDROGEN CAR

Every year, Green Team Twente has new members that push the boundary of sustainable mobility by building one of the most efficient hydrogen cars. You will work together with international, like-minded and extremely motivated students, you will acquire knowledge from experts and you will travel through Europe (or even further) to participate in Eco-Marathons.

Having won the prestigious Shell Eco-Marathon (over 250 teams competing) in 2012 and 2017 and ending up third two times, Green Team Twente is one of the world’s top teams in efficiency racing. We are the first international student team of the UT consisting of engineering, design, business and social science students.

ALL DISCIPLINES CONNECTED

We offer a unique team composition consisting of both full-time and part-time members. A wide range of positions is available, both technical and non-technical. You can learn how to get in touch with companies, organize multiple large-scale events, manage a big and complex team and of course engineer high-tech systems. There are also possibilities for a minor with several studies: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical engineering, Industrial design, Advanced Technology, Creative Technology and Applied Physics. Most of the minors are 15 ECs, whlie some are 5 ECs. You can check with your study adviser whether this is a possibility for you.

FUNCTIONS

The functions are divided into three main groups: management, communications and technical. The technical team is divided in several teams, which are mentioned below. Note that one person can have multiple responsibilities. For example, you can be responsible for finance and the logistics of getting to the race. You are not bound to one function: a lot of overlap is possible. If you like multiple functions, just mention it in your letter and we can see which function fits best or maybe we could combine something!

MANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT IN GENERAL

The management team is responsible for all  aspects that concern the whole team: big decisions needs to be made and you will carry part of this responsibility. You will be in contact with partners and with the University of Twente and Saxion. Of course you will also be busy with the next year’s team, as it is important that Green Team Twente will continue to grow and improve.

TEAM MANAGER

As a team manager, you are responsible for the entire project. By working closely with the technical manager, the finance and control manager and the communications manager, you make sure overall goals are made and will be achieved. Therefore, it is very important that you have a clear overview of what happens, as team members will come to you if there are any problems. In addition to the team, you are the contact person for the race organization and for important stakeholders of Green Team Twente. You will give presentations and speak to the press if needed. Besides that, you jump in where needed, you are the general supporter of the entire team!

FINANCE AND CONTROL

Finances are one of the main pillars of the team. Keeping track of the budget, accounting and estimating financial risks are part of your primary tasks. There is close contact with the sub-teams needed to ensure a good overview of the current situation. For the cash inflow, you have close contact with external relations, while the outflow is your ultimate responsibility. At all time, risks have to be estimated and if they become too big, you are the one that needs to step in.

TECHNICAL MANAGER

As a technical manager, you are the right hand of the team manager, but more focused on the technical side of the project. You are responsible for the car and ensure that the specified (sub) goals are achieved. Also, you will collaborate with external relations to approach technical partners that can help with materials, parts or knowledge.  Above all, you know all the technical problems before they are even discovered. You will take care of the overall integration within the technical team and that the entire process runs smoothly.

COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

You are responsible for all the media attention and the main contact for all the external relations. The media consists of events, social media, press releases, newsletters and more. You are responsible for branding Green Team Twente. Of course, you will get help from your teammates. Besides that, you will be the contact person for the press together with the team manager. Within the team, you are responsible for the contact from and towards the communications team. You ensure an optimal cooperation within the communications team and that results in a strong and sustainable image of Green Team Twente.

COMMUNICATIONS

COMMUNICATIONS IN GENERAL

Depending on what you would like, you can apply for a specific function or for the communications team in general. It depends on you and the other members how you would like to divide the tasks. Of course, all  tasks needs to be covered and one or two will have the final responsibility, but other than that everything is possible! The strength of the team is that you work together. Additionally, if you are interested in doing a part-time function in the communications team and a part-time function in the technical team, this is of course also possible.

EVENTS

You are responsible for both the events organized by Green Team Twente as the ones organized by external parties. Of course, Green Team Twente gets asked to join events, both from our partners as from parties like the municipality or other large organizations. You will decide which ones we go to and how this is handled. Other than this, Green Team Twente organizes its own events. You will ensure all interested parties and stakeholders are able to think along and are involved in the project. A large annual event of Green Team Twente is the car presentation. This is when you show the public what you have worked on as a team for one entire year. It is important to surprise partners and stakeholders every year again, so no idea is too crazy!

MARKETING

It is often underestimated how important a well-founded marketing strategy is for a student team. It is your job to draw up such a marketing strategy. The execution of this strategy will be done by the events coordinator, the graphic designer and you by updating our social media pages. The strategy is best founded if research is done for what you want to achieve as marketing chief. Experience as a marketer is a pro, but not required.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

Without partners, Green Team Twente would not exist. You, as external relations, are responsible for the contact with these partners. You work to maintain existing relationships with sponsors and you are always looking for new contacts. To do this job, it is important to know what the team needs and therefore you will work closely together with the technical manager. To ensure that partners are satisfied with the cooperation, it is important to be flexible and to find out why a company has confidence in Green Team Twente. Green Team Twente is always growing. You are also responsible for the visual representation of technical developments and the visual identity of the team. Furthermore, you will work together with the structural designers of the team to create the visual appearance of the car (livery). This means you decide how the car will look like! Lastly, you have a lot of creative freedom, to use new technologies such as projection mapping. To apply for this function, having experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc. is advised.

The hydro-electric engineering team of Green Team Twente is responsible for the heart of the car, which is the hydrogen fuel cell and all of its electronics. For example, ingoing air needs to be humidified, outgoing gasses need to be purged and the entire fuel-cell needs to be cooled. Also, the fuel cell will not function without the electronics with which it’s intertwined. These electronic circuits sense temperature, voltage, current and also regulate the amount of energy the fuel cell needs to produce. As part of the hydro-electric engineering team, knowledge of either electronics or chemics is needed. Interest in both of these areas is a big plus. If this part of Green Team Twente fits your interests, don’t hesitate, just apply!

Interest in this field is the most important requirement, basic knowledge of mechanical- and/or electrical engineering would be convenient for this function!

The structural team makes sure that the car is as aerodynamic as possible, while still being rigid enough to pass all the requirements. Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering, aerodynamics and dynamics are useful  to have for this function.

DATA ACQUISITION

Of course building a working car is one thing, but winning a championship in efficient driving is something else. In order to do this as efficiently as possible, both the race- and car data need to be implemented into various models that predict the performance and efficiency of the car. The data that comes from the race and that is coming from the car also need to be analyzed during the testing days, and of course during the race itself. You’ll be at every testing day and will get to know all of the ins- and outs of the car.
