Having won the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon (over 250 teams competing) in 2012 and ending up third two times, Green Team Twente is one of the world’s top teams in efficiency racing. We are the first international student team of the UT consisting of engineering, design, business and social science students.
We offer a unique team composition consisting of both full-time and part-time members. A wide range of positions are available, such as getting in touch with companies, organizing multiple large-scale events, managing a big and complex team and of course engineering high-tech systems.
The functions are divided into three main groups, the Management Team, the Technical Team and the Communications Team. One person can have multiple responsibilities. For example, you are responsible for finance and the challenge to get started with logistic and operate in an organizational area. There is a large variety of possibilities of how responsibilities can be combined.
As a full-time member of Green Team Twente, you have the responsibility to improve and modify the car of Team 2017. During this year, you will get valuable knowledge and experience you won’t learn in the standard curriculum, such as designing of a state-of-the-art concepts, learning to work together very effectively, how to manage a team of consisting of different disciplines and dealing with stressful situations. Also on managerial roles and responsibilities of major engineering projects will not be missing.
Commitment – 40 hours a week
As a part-time member of the Green Team Twente do you have the challenge to (co-) design fantastic elements for our next car, which are indispensable during the Eco-Marathon! You will do work with motivated peers and experts from the University of Twente and from different companies. Also, there are part-time options available on the communication side, thinking of organizing events and graphic design.
Commitment – around 10 hours a week
At this moment, there are four studies with the possibility to fill Green Team Twente as a minor. In this way, it is possible to get study-credits while you are busy with the coolest project of your student life!

As a Team Leader, you are responsible for the entire project. By working closely with the Technical Manager and the Marketing and Communications Manager, you make sure overall goals are made and will be achieved. Therefore, it is very important that you have at all-time a clear overview, because team members will come to you if there are any problems. Also next to the team, you are the contact person to the organization of the race and important stakeholders of Green Team Twente. You will regularly give presentations and speak to the press. Besides that, you jump in where needed, you are the general supporter of the entire team.
Finance and Logistics
Finances are one of the main pillars of the team. The budget, accounting and estimating financial risk belongs to your main tasks. There is close contact with the sub-teams needed to ensure a good overview of the current situation. For the incoming flow of money, you have many discussions with the External Relations and the outflow is your ultimate responsibility. At all time, risks has to be estimated and if they are likely to become too big, you are the one who blows the whistle and takes the initiative to solve it.
At Logistics, you will be responsible for the logistics involved at the Eco-marathons. The whole team including a big load of materials and of course your brand new hydrogen-car has to arrive at the race. In order to handle this in a good way, a lot of preparations has to be taken a couple of months before the start of the race.
As the secretary of Green Team Twente, you are responsible for all the incoming contacts. You make priorities and ensures a very efficient working environment for the entire team. That includes making proper minutes and the days will be very different every time. Together, your role of secretary ensures to have a very efficient organization.
As a Technical Manager, you are the right hand of the Team Leader, but then more focused on the technical side of the project. You are responsible for the car and ensure that the specified (sub) goals are achieved. Also, you will collaborate with External Relations to approach partners like milling companies to let them produce some parts. Above all, you know all the technical problems before they are even discovered, in that way you can respond just in time. You will take care of the overall integration within the technical team and that the entire process runs smoothly.
Marketing and Communication
You are responsible for all the media attention and the main contact for all the External Relations. The media consists of events, social media, press releases, newsletters and more. You are responsible for branding Green Team Twente of course you will get help from your teammates. Besides that, you will work together with the Team Leader as the contact person for the press. Within the team you are the contact from and towards the Communications Team. You ensure an optimal cooperation within the Communications Team and that results in a strong and clear sustainable image of Green Team Twente.
Hydrogen system chief
As hydrogen system chief, you are responsible for the fuel-cell and everything that comes with it. You create and control the heart of the entire system. You learn how hydrogen can be efficiently converted to electricity and together with partners specialized in hydrogen you make this process more efficient than ever before. For this you will work along with your team members and partners.
Powertrain – team
In the Powertrain team you are responsible of getting the energy that flows out the fuel cell to the engine. Your job is to minimize all the energy losses regarding the DCDC boost converter, the motor controllers. the buffer and many more. You will go through the entire design and production process, not only the design and modeling, also the creation and installation will be your responsibility. For example, your printed circuit boards, which really can make a difference, can be found back in the car. For this function, it is important that you have programming experience in C and the motivation to learn new programs.
Drivetrain – team
As the Drive Train team, your focus is to get the most efficient energy transmission with from the engine trough the wheelsThe design, development and construction of the gearbox, clutch and wheels will be a project of yours. For this, you have close contact with supporting companies and you'll be in the workshop yourself to produce your own parts. For this function, it is really an advantage that you have experience with Solidworks.
Secondary system – team
As Green Team Twente, we are participating in the Urban Concept class of the Shell Eco-Marathon, in which elements of a city car are integrated, such as wipers, lights, horn and a dashboard. All this runs on the separate secondary system, running on LiPo batteries that never meets the fuel cell drivetrain. So a lot of various components, that have to be made from concept and design to soldering and installing it in the car. For this function, it is important that you have programming experience in C and the motivation to learn new programs.
Structural and Aerodynamics – team
In Structural and Aerodynamics, you will design the body, the new and improved shape of our hydrogen car. You have to choose the right carbon fiber for body that ensures sufficient strength and taking care of the least possible amount of air resistance. You are also working on the integration of all components. For all of this you will do quite some calculations and modulations. You work along with the rest of the technical team to know things like: How big is each part, how many components are made, how are various components mounted? For this function, it is important and it give you a big advantage that you have modeling experience and knowledge of programs such as ANSYS and COMSOL.
As Data Acquisist, you make sure all relevant data of the vehicle is registered. First you analyse where you want to gather the information. Secondly, you make sure that the data can be measured in a reliable way. After this, your tasks is to read out and collect the data. In our car we are using the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus standard. This system transmits data to a database, which can be read from outside the vehicle. This entire process is your responsibility. Since the data obtained by you is of vital importance for the strategists of the team, you will closely cooperate with those guys. Having experience with C++ and Python programming is a benefit if you want to apply for this function.
What is optimal velocity for the car during the race, to consume the least amount of energy? How can we boost the performance of the car? This and many more questions are important in strategy. Your task is to constantly analyse how to optimise the car, in which simulations play a crucial role. This comes along with measuring the various components of the car and getting the know the car inside out. To make the measurement protocols, you will discuss a lot with the rest of the technical team. Having experience with programming (MATLAB, Python, C++) is a big plus.
Without partners, Green Team Twente would not exist. You as an External Relations officer are responsible for those partners. You are working to maintain existing relationships with sponsors and you are always looking for new contacts. To do this job, it is important to know what the team needs and therefore you will work closely together with the Technical Manager. To ensure that partners are satisfied with the cooperation it is important to be flexible and find out why a company has confidence in Green Team Twente. Green Team Twente is always growing. Do you want to expand its partner network and expand your own business network as well? Then apply for the External Relations position!
Being responsible for the events that Green Team Twente organises means ensuring all interested parties and stakeholders are able to think along and are involved in the project. To do so, you will work closely together with the rest of the Communications Team. This involves figuring out what partners expect, taking into consideration what the audience/visitors want, and looking for a suitable way of promoting each event. A large annual event of Green Team Twente is the car presentation. This is when you show the public what you have worked on as a team for one entire year. It is important to surprise partners and stakeholders every year again, so no idea is too crazy!
As a graphic designer, you decide about and are responsible for the visual appearance of the team. The promotion of events and eco-marathon will be dressed by your creativity in the form of posters, flyers and billboards. You are also responsible for the visual representation of technical developments and the visual identity of the team. Furthermore, you will work together with the structural designers of the team to create the visual appearance of the car (livery). This means you decide how the car will look like! Lastly, you have a lot of creative freedom, to use new technologies such as projection mapping. To apply for this function, having experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc. is required.

We will announce the new team before the minor application deadline, which is on the 12th of May 2017.

What are eco-marathons?
Eco-marathons are efficiency races. We participate in the Shell Eco-Marathon, the largest (student) efficiency race of the world. This year teams have to drive 10 rounds (1.65 km each lap) within 39 minutes. The final winner is determined by the team that has consumed the least amount of fuel.
