Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

Why are we racing on hydrogen?

For years we have been building an efficient hydrogen-powered car: driving as long as possible on as little hydrogen as possible. Since 2022 our vision has changed and we have decided to participate in Formula Student. With this we are building a hydrogen racing car based on power and speed whilst keeping the car light and aerodynamic. We believe the racing world offers more room for innovative hydrogen solutions and want to show the world what hydrogen has to offer.

How does the hydrogen system work?

The hydrogen fuel cell system works by converting hydrogen fuel into electricity through an electrochemical process. Hydrogen gas is supplied to the fuel cell’s anode, where it is split into protons and electrons. The protons pass through a membrane, while the electrons take an external path, creating an electric current that can be used to power devices. At the cathode, oxygen combines with protons and electrons to form water as a byproduct. This process generates electricity without producing harmful emissions, making fuel cells a clean and efficient energy source.

What is the maximum speed of the hydrogen race car?

Right now we are working on the new hydrogen racing car, so we are not able to say anything with certainty yet. With the gearbox we have now, we can go up to 75 km/h.

What is your cooling power?

Cooling power is crucial for a hydrogen racing car. As hydrogen fuel cells generate significant heat during operation, effective cooling systems are necessary to maintain optimal performance and prevent overheating. By ensuring efficient cooling power, the car can maximize its power output and overall efficiency, contributing to a successful and safe racing experience.

Theoretically, the cooling power is 70 kW. Because of practical reasons, it is now 30 kW.

How big is the radiator?

The radiator in a hydrogen race car plays a vital role in managing the vehicle’s temperature and ensuring optimal performance. As hydrogen fuel cells generate heat during operation, an efficient radiator system is crucial for cooling the car’s components and maintaining their efficiency.

We have the radiator on the large side. In fact, it is 0.6 square meters.

What type of suspensions systems do you have?

We use direct link suspension, also known as push-rod or pull-rod suspension. We find this a suitable choice for our hydrogen race car due to its benefits in terms of aerodynamics and packaging. By locating the shock absorbers and springs inside the chassis or bodywork, this suspension configuration allows for a lower and more streamlined design, reducing drag and improving airflow efficiency.

Recruitment questions

Before when do I need to apply?

You can apply through our “JOIN US” page. You must send your application and motivation letter by May 1.

Can I apply for multiple functions?

Absolutely! You can apply for any positions that seems interesting to you.

How does the process work?

You first start by applying for the position(s) you would like to do. You also submit a motivation letter. Then you come to the office for the first interview. After this interview you get the case of the position(s) which you have to submit within a certain time. Then you will come to a second and also final interview. Finally, you will be called whether you are part of Green Team Twente!

Is there an opportunity for a walk-in day?

Definitely! We organize plenty of interest activities to get to know the team and functions better. Are you  unable to attend? No worries! You can always send an email to info@greenteamtwente.nl and schedule a walk-in day with your function(s) of choice.

I am international, can I join Green Team Twente?

This is not a problem! For years Green Team Twente has been international and we have students all over the world. So it doesn’t matter where you are from.

Can I use Green Team Twente for school EC's?

You certainly can! There are also possibilities for a minor with several studies: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design, Advanced Technology, Creative Technology and Applied Physics. Most of the minors are 30 ECs, while some are 15 ECs. You can check with your study advisor whether this is a possibility for you.

My study does not match the function I am interested in. Can I still apply?

Definitely! Especially within Green Team Twente there is the opportunity to challenge yourself and broaden your knowledge. So if you do not study a technical education but would like to be part of a technical subteam, this is certainly possible! This also applies to all other subteams. It does not matter what kind of study you do.

As long as you are motivated and eager to learn, that is the most important thing at Green Team Twente.

Which subteams are there?

We have four sub-teams:

  • Management
  • Communication
  • Mechanics
  • Hydroelectric

You can see more about the subteams and functions on our ‘JOIN US’ page.
